The "6th Annual 'KEEP THE OCEAN BLUE' North Shore Tow-In Surf Championship 2009/2010"
3/7/2010 UPDATE! The Event is still on hold through 3/31/2010! Stay Tuned!

The "6th Annual KEEP THE OCEAN BLUE North Shore Tow-In Surf Championship 2009/2010" will have it's holding period for 14 weeks throughout the 2009/2010 Winter Surf Season from 12/15/2009-3/31/2010. ONE DAY ONLY!
In 04/05 we started to run the event on JANUARY 18th, 2004...but we had to postpone and wound up running on MARCH 8th, 2005! In 05/06 we ran the event on FEBRUARY 5th, 2006. In 06/07 we ran the event on FEBRUARY 15th, 2007. In 07/08, we would have run the event on FEBRUARY 14th, 2008 if we had not postponed the tow-in out of respect for the INAUGURAL BIG WAVE STAND UP PADDLE EVENT that was held at Makaha that day. So far, we have always run in JANUARY, FEBRUARY or MARCH! That is the reason for our 14 week holding period!
The surf did not really get quite big enough for "4th Annual Bank of Hawaii/ Atlas Sales North Shore Tow-In 07/08" to get underway at the breaks of Avalanche or Puaena at Outside Haleiwa Harrbor last year (07/08), EXCEPT for on Valentine's Day (2/4/2008)! Last year's "5th Annual KEEP THE OCEAN BLUE / Bank of Hawaii / Atlas North Shore Tow-In Surf Championship 08/09" just didn't get the right swell size or conditions for a full 8 hour day.The event was postponed until this year's 2009/2010 Winter Surf Season. This year's holding period will be from 12/15/2009-3/31/2010.
A FULL COMPETITORS LIST FOR THE 2009-2010 EVENT IS POSTED ON THE COMPETITOR'S INVITE LIST PAGE! All Invited teams from last year's event will be carried forward to this year's list. TODAY IS SUNDAY, MARCH 7th, 2010!
Last year, THE DIRECTORS AND STAFF OF "TOW-IN SURFERS LLC", THE MAIN ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORING BODY FOR "The 5th Annual KEEP THE OCEAN BLUE / BANK OF HAWAII / ATLAS SALES North Shore Tow-In Surf Championship 08/09" WERE WAITING FOR A SOLID 25-30 FOOT SWELL/HAWAIIAN SCALE (40-60 FOOT FACES) AS AN IDEAL WAVE HEIGHT REQUIREMENT FOR RUNNING THE "5TH ANNUAL NORTH SHORE TOW-IN 2008/2009"! HOWEVER, THEY WOULD HAVE SETTLED FOR 20 FOOT SOLID SURF WITH 25 FOOT SETS! It just didn't work out that way last winter surf season. So the North Shore Tow-In was postponed until this year's 12/15/2009-3/31/2010 North Shore Tow-In Event holding period! All competitors on last year's list remain on the list for this year (2009/2010)!

SOME NORTH SHORE TOW-IN EVENT HISTORY
The 2005-2006 "Tow-In Surfers LLC" Extreme Tow-In Surf Event known as the "2nd Annual 'PHELONY' North ShoreTow-In Surfing Championships 2005-2006" took place on "Super Bowl Sunday"... Feb. 5th, 2006. As a result, the event was dubbed "Super Tow Sunday"! That year the event had Big Perfect Surf in the 40 foot+ range (20 feet Hawaiian Scale) all day on February 5th, 2006... and the rights at Outside Puaena Point were all-time! The Event was dedicated to the memory of Mark Foo and it was also HIS BIRTHDAY! See the archives of Towsurfer.com, Surfersvillage.com, NorthShoreTowIn.com, SurfNewsNetwork.com and more for a full wrap-up with an article and links to still photos AND video of that amazing day! Go to Contest Video and Photos via this website's homepage. Click on the Blue-Colored word "WEB" to get to the "2nd Annual PHELONY North Shore Tow-In 05/06" section of this website. The contest holding period for the 2005-2006 event was from 12/15/05-3/31/06! Contest organizers decided to call it "ON" on the morning of Feb. 5th, 2006. It was a day of hollow frieght-train rights with huge spitting barrels! Thanks to Bruce Purcell and Honolulu Streetwear's PHELONY LOGO LINE, the event had a Main Title Sponsor and a prize purse of $10,000. The "2nd Annual PHELONY North Shore Tow-In Surfing Championship 2005-2006" was held ONE FULL DAY ONLY during the 14 week window. The 1st place tow-in team of Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala of Oahu won $5000. 2nd place team-mates John Gangini and Yuri Soledad of Maui got $2500. 3rd place team-mates Sylvio Mancusi and Pato Texeira of Brazil/ Hawaii took home $1500. Congratulations to all competitors and contest organizers! You all made history on this epic day of massively challenging but perfect Huge Surf and extremely hard-core towsurfing bravado!
With really good luck and top-notch swell forecasting, contest organizers completed the 8 hour event in One Full Day of Big Wave Competition. For there to be a potential "GO" ALERT STATUS for our event, the #1 Buoy needs to be holding consistently at around or above at least 20 foot plus all night on the afternoon and evening of the day prior to a possible "GO" to warrant a 100% red alert status coming into effect! As it was last year the #1 buoy maxed out at 20 feet/20 seconds. Good enough! ( If it rings true according to all our various surf and weather forecasting sources that the swell will be big enough, clean enough and last long enough... then we issue a 72 hour "GO" ALERT that the contest is likely to be called on for the day after the next approaching day.) Our 48 hour call is more qualified. If its too big for Waimea Bay, it may very likely be for us guys. In the future, everyone please monitor the contest hotline at 808-227-2425 and also monitor the buoys yourselves at 8089736114. You can call the NOAA Weather Service at 973-4383 for a 5 day report and/or check the internet. Particularly check www.SurfNewsNetwork.com with a telephone-line surf report at 596-SURF (7873). ALSO check www.NorthShoreTowIn.com or your weather-radio or any other way that you usually get your most accurate surf predictions!
At the "1st Annual North Shore Tow-In 04/05, Massive Swells came on Monday, January 17, 2005... Surf reached heights above the High-Surf Warning Level of 25 feet as the #1 Buoy hit 26 feet over night on the night before. Unfortunately, the High Surf was joined by rain and bad winds in the mid-morning What started as a contestable looking early morning of conditions at dawn at Outside Avalanche on Monday, the 17th of January, 2005...turned into worsening conditions as the 1st two heats of the contest got under way. It was surfable, but with the conditions it was hard to judge and not good for filming, so all agreed to postpone the event going into heat #3 until we had a cleaner but similar sized swell! When we did run again on March 8th, 2005... we decided to start over from the beginning, for the sake of fairness and completeness ...but congratulations to those that did surf in those first three early heats on that day when we had to postpone the event. As it turned out, we did get a second day of size-able and contestable surf on March 8th, 2005...and we were able to run the event at Outside Avalanche in some very clean 15-20 foot plus lefts that barrelled right outside the main red channel buoy at Outside Haleiwa Harbor. The tow-in team of Eric Fisher and Matt Lozano took 1st place. Brothers team-mates Cully and Todd Kamisugi got a close second with some gnarly tube rides. Chargers Robbie Frangipane and Todd Robertson got an admirable 3rd. Pro towguy and recent "Billabong XXL Winner", Dan Moore, snagged 4th place along with his partner, John Admunson. A world-wide broadcast of the documentary based on this event and the "evolution of tow-in" is happening right now world-wide and has been since February 2006! There is now also a DVD of that same show available in surf shops, video stores and all over the internet since February 2006! Check it out! "Pacific Avalanche" by HAWAIIAN EXTREME SPORTS! The "Evolution of the Revolution of Tow-In Surfing!"

you could be backlisted! Alternates will be called in order of the alternate
list. However, they may be entered in order of who showed up first and who signed
up and paid up first. Particularly important is that you have a Hawaii State
Tow-In Surfing License and are 100% conforming to all the safety and equipment
rules of the Hawaii State Tow-In Surfing License. For updates, call 808-227-2425.
Contest email is at AceCool45@Hotmail.com (primary) or AceCool47@Hotmail.com
(secondary). Contest Website is at www.Haleiwa-Tow-In.com and/or www.NorthShoreTowIn.com.
You can also get to it via www.WahineBlue.com, www.SurfNewNetwork.com, www.SurfersVillage.com
and many, many other websites! We will wait for the best day to run on the biggest
swell of the 2009-2010 Winter Surf Season. Our holding period is December 15th,
2009 through March 31st, 2010. We are alway hoping for good waves early on...However,
the " 2nd Annual Phelony North Shore Tow-In 05/06" took place on February
5th, 2006. The first year's "1st Annual North Shore Tow-In 04/05"
took place on March 8th. The "3rd Annual Bank of Hawaii North Shore Tow-In
06/07" took place on 2/15/07! You never know the ocean's schedule for sure.
Hence the LONG holding period. The DAY of DAYS comes once or twice a season
if and when it decides to at all! Watch for High Surf Warnings and 20 foot Plus
readings on the #1 Buoy at 973-6114. If we get those kind of buoy readings on
Buoy#1 from well before dark of the day prior to a possible Event "GO"
Status or condition red alert, be ready for a possible dawn call and a "go"
for this EXTREME BIG WAVE TOW-IN SURFING EVENT! The "6th Annual KEEP THE
OCEAN BLUE North Shore Tow-In Surf Championship 2009/2010" might just be
the Biggest, Baddest and Gnarliest Tow-In Event ever held on the Planet Earth!!!
Stay Tuned Sports Fans!!!
If you have not entered this event before or are not on the invite list for last year's postponed "5th Annual KEEP THE OCEAN BLUE / Bank of Hawaii / Atlas Sales North Shore Tow-In 08/09", but are interested in competing in the 2009/2010 Event... Please email Alec "Ace" Cooke at AceCool45@Hotmail.com and also call immediately at 808-227-2425 or secondary Phone # 8082215158. If no answer, please leave a message on the contest hotline with your best contact email and phone number. We want to hold a potential spot for you but you need to get in touch ASAP. Remember, both team-mates must have a Hawaii Tow-In Surf License and your PWC must have a current tow-in surf decal from DLNR/DOBOR. If you took the Hawaii tow-in certification class, you should have your "Ocean Safety" card. You can take the card and your PWC registration down to Sand Island Road #4 the new home of DLNR/Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) and they will issue you a current Tow-Surf Decal for your ski! All competitor's skis must have a current Hawaii Tow-In Decal stuck on it. There have been more tow-in surf licensing classes recently at WCC in Kaneohe taught by tow-in surf teacher/guru Ian Masterson. All competitors have a chance to make sure they get Hawaii Tow-In Licensed. Call 235-7433 at Windward Community College/ Office of Adult Continuing Education at W.C.C. in Kaneohe to register. These classes are on Weekends / Saturday and Sunday from 9AM-3PM when they happen. There has to be enough students in the class to fill it up. That is around 20 seats filled minimum, so talk to your tow-partner and other budding tow-in surfing friends. Sign up now! Tow-Teams do not have to be chipped in granite, but it sure helps. Everyone has a few spare towpartners, or they should! To make sure you qualify, get a solid and committed partner. The team's performance by each driver getting each surfer the best waves in the best way and the surfer's subsequent stellar surfing of those waves will be what makes the winning team win! It is a team sport, so each surfer must ride at least ONE wave per heat. Best 3 waves count. One "switch" between driver and surfer is required for a complete score! Individual surfers MAY enter, if their usual driver is a going to be a no-show or is not available! You CAN team up with other single entrants. However, there are no guarantees you'll score a partner "out of the blue". So register in advance and come in solid pre-set teams if you possibly can! The contest staff will keep a list of all available qualified extra drivers, but there are no guarantees that one will be available to any particular individual towsurfer on competition day. It is MUCH, MUCH better to pre-register and come as a pre-designated "seasoned veteran" 2-man tow-in team!
Please get in touch ASAP! If the event is called on, the traffic will MAX OUT! Be prepared to stay for the awards ceremony at the Haleiwa Harbor and the Post Event Party tentatively arranged to be at Haleiwa Joe's and/or Breakers! Bring a change of clothes! We will announce the winners at the awards ceremony including special performance awards ASAP right after the end of the finals. So everyone needs to show at the ADMINISTRATION TENT behind the Lifeguard Tower at Haleiwa Harbor right at the end of the competition! This should be about 5:30 PM on Event Day just before sunset. It will be MUCH BETTER IF COMPETITORS just stay in the Haleiwa Harbor Area! Right after the awards ceremony we will all head over to Haleiwa Joe's or Breakers. If we land at Haleiwa Joe's, (dependent upon on how crowded Haleiwa Joe's is on our Day of Days) there will be Security on hand to watch contestant's vehicles and watercraft! Parking will be harbor-side of Haleiwa Joe's on the center mole parking area which is the middle dock parking area leading from Haleiwa Joe's to the Haleiwa Harbormaster's Building. Please enter through the Haleiwa Joe's Bar's side door if you have been informed that the Event After- Party is there. The After-Party Venue will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Harbor at about 6PM. Party to start about 7:00 PM, with footage from the day's event on the closed circuit TVs. The awards ceremony at the Harbor before sundown and the Party at Joe's or Breaker's at 7PM will be photographed for world-wide broadcast news reports and future event documentaries. So don't miss it! Food will be available. We would like all competitors to attend. Even if you don't win 1st place, there will be honors for Biggest Wave, Best Tube, Best Maneuver, Worst Wipe-Out, Best Team Work and other special awards and honorable mentions! Good luck to everyone!!!! PRAY FOR SURF and STAY TUNED SPORTS FANS!!! ALOHA AND MAHALO, ACE
